Gardening is more than a popular trend, it's also just plain fun to grow food at your home. Touted as a step towards self sufficiency, gardening can save you money and has other perks, such as the fact that homegrown veggies and herbs simply taste better.
If you’re a novice gardener but would still like to try out your green thumb, a small herb garden is a good place to start. If your kitchen has lots of light, you can start with a few favorite herbs in pots. Basil, parsley, and dill all grow well in containers.
Tomatoes are another good plant to test in your home garden. They grow well in containers, so they’re great if you’re new to gardening or if you don’t have a lot of outdoor space. Even homeowners and apartment dwellers with small patio space, can look into square-foot gardening. There are many ideas for what to plant in a 3 foot by 3 foot plot, and even a small garden space can yield a surprising amount of produce.
If your home includes a lot of yard space, you can plant a much bigger garden. Talk to the experts at your local gardening supply store or pick the brain of a gardening friend so you know how to prepare the soil. Once your soil is ready, you can start exploring the many varieties and types of produce you'd like to grow. Having a garden is top on the list for many home buyers. Was it something you considered when you purchased your home?
